Granny bikes and grandpa bikes are the most classic and trusted bicycles in the Netherlands — timeless, comfortable, and designed for everyday use without unnecessary complications. At Facebike, you will find a carefully selected range of granny bikes and grandpa bikes of proven quality, professionally assembled and delivered ready to ride, with personalized advice to help you make the perfect choice.

What Makes a Granny Bike Special?

A granny bike features a low, curved step-through frame, making mounting and dismounting easy and safe — even for people with limited mobility. The frame geometry provides an upright, relaxed riding position that reduces strain on the back and improves visibility in traffic.

A grandpa bike typically has a slightly higher frame with a traditional top tube but shares the same philosophy: comfort, stability, and simplicity above all else. Both types are designed for everyday use — from a quick trip to the market to a relaxing ride around the neighborhood.

Features Compared

Feature Granny Bike Grandpa Bike
Frame type Low, curved step-through frame High frame with a traditional top tube
Step-through height Very low Medium
Riding position Fully upright Upright
Target riders Women, seniors Men, seniors
Stability Excellent Excellent

Equipment and Comfort

When buying a high-quality granny bike, it is important to consider the right equipment to ensure everyday comfort and safety:

  1. Chain guard — fully enclosed to keep clothing clean and extend the drivetrain's service life
  2. Mudguards — front and rear protection in all weather conditions
  3. Luggage rack — sturdy and capable of carrying groceries or a bicycle bag
  4. Handlebar design — wide and ergonomic for a relaxed riding position
  5. Wheel size — typically 28 inches for smooth riding on paved roads
  6. Lighting — integrated or dynamo-powered for safety

Buying a Granny Bike: What Should You Look For?

When choosing granny bikes or grandpa bikes, there are several practical considerations:

  • Step-through height suitable for your mobility
  • Saddle height adjusted to your leg length
  • Braking system — coaster brake or hand brakes
  • Weight — lighter models are easier to handle

A lightweight bicycle with a low step-through height and a stable frame is the ideal combination for many seniors. If you are unsure, our experts will be happy to help you determine the correct size and equipment.

FAQ

What Is the Difference Between a Granny Bike and a Grandpa Bike?

A granny bike features a low, curved step-through frame, making it ideal for women and people with limited mobility. A grandpa bike has a traditional high frame with a top tube, designed for men who prefer a classic riding position.

What Wheel Size Is Best for a Granny Bike?

Most granny bikes and grandpa bikes are equipped with 28-inch wheels. This wheel size provides a smooth riding experience on paved roads, excellent directional stability, and is ideal for Dutch cycling paths.

Are Granny Bikes from Facebike Delivered Ready to Ride?

Yes — every granny bike and grandpa bike from Facebike is professionally assembled and fully adjusted before delivery. You receive a bicycle that is ready to ride immediately, with properly adjusted brakes and gears.
